In 1831, vanadium was rediscovered by Nils Gabriel Sefstrom, and del Rio’s work was verified by Friedrich Wohler. However, in 1805 it was claimed that del Rio had mistaken chromium for a new element, causing del Rio to retract his discovery. He then changed the name to erythronium (meaning red in Greek) as many vanadium salts turned red when heated. He named the element panchromium (meaning all-colours in Greek) as it produced salts of many different colours. In 1801, Andres Manuel del Rio discovered vanadium in an ore called brown lead (now called vanadinite). Display: Titanium metal pellet and rod, titanium oxides – TiO (beige), Ti 2O 3 (purple), TiO 2 (white, also known as titania), titania-containing sunscreen and white paint, and rutilated quartz (quartz contained rutile TiO 2) Titanium alloys are also used in the aerospace industry as they are light, strong and durable. The main use of titanium is as titanium dioxide, used as a white pigment in many applications including paint, toothpaste and sunscreen. Klaproth, upon becoming aware of Gregor’s work, confirmed that he had discovered the same element. In 1795, Martin Heinrich Klaproth independently discovered titanium in the mineral rutile and named it after the Titans of Greek mythology. He concluded that it contained iron oxide and a second oxide which he could not identify, and which he attributed to a new element that he named menachite. William Gregor discovered titanium in 1791 when examining the mineral ilmenite. Display: Scandium metal crystals and bicycle seat post clamp (bolt made from scandium alloy) The main use of scandium is in aluminium alloys to increase their strength for specialised applications in the aerospace industry and for sports equipment. Pure samples of scandium metal were not produced until 1937 as it is neither particularly easy to extract, abundant nor useful. It was detected ten years later in 1879 in the minerals gadolinite and euxenite by Lars Fredrik Nilson who named it after Scandinavia ( Scandia in Latin), as he was Swedish. Lecture 29: Transition Metals: Crystal Field Theory Part II Lecture 28: Transition Metals: Crystal Field Theory Part I Lecture 27: Introduction to Transition Metals Lecture 26: Chemical and Biological Oxidations Lecture 25: Oxidation-Reduction and Electrochemical Cells By the end of the unit, viewers should be able to calculate electrochemical cell potentials, identity which compound is the better oxidizing agent, draw energy diagrams that explain why one cobalt compound is blue and another red, and explain how a chelator works to treat acute lead poisoning. Viewers can observe some of these special properties for themselves as spectacular color changes afforded by solutions of nickel and cobalt salts are demonstrated. Revisiting the concept of atomic orbitals, we discuss how the occupation of electrons in d-orbitals gives rise to the special properties of d-block metal-containing complexes. Whereas metals in group I and II of the periodic table are only oxidized by one and two electrons, respectively, transition (d-block) metals are capable of achieving multiple oxidation states. In Unit IV, we continue to consider chemical reactions but now focus on reactions that involve the loss (oxidation) and gain (reduction) of electrons. Unit IV: Transition Metals & Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Speaking of changes in media handling, Android 13 has also received an iOS-esque photo picker interface. Of course, apps will have to support this new method, but Google will probably make sure that it doesn't take too long until it's mandatory. The approach means that apps have to ask for access to audio, video, and image files separately, making it possible to preserve your privacy further. Google will likely never go as far as Apple went with the "Ask app not to track" prompt that cost Facebook billions of dollars in ad revenue, but small improvements are sprinkled here and there in Android 13.įor one, Android 13 adds a new media files permission that makes access to your files even more granular for apps. But the company is still trying to make the process more transparent and make it harder for bad actors and malware to access data that isn't needed. After all, Google is an advertising company that lives off the data people share with it. Privacy is a difficult concept on Android. I was initially displeased with how Google handled the separation between the two search bars, but the situation has gotten a lot better following the initial release. Thankfully, it looks like the company is exploring bringing back this behavior with Android 13's March 2023 Feature Drop. I would have preferred for Google to retain this "enter equals open app" behavior in the app drawer, as it adds more friction and makes you stretch your thumb all the way to the top of the screen again just to open an app. If you routinely do this, prepare for loads of searches like "mes" or "gma" in your search history when you just wanted to open Messages or Gmail. Otherwise, you will end up doing a Google search for whatever phrase you entered. Instead, you have to tap its icon at the top. For example, when you want to use the keyboard to search for and then open an app, you can no longer simply hit enter/search to open the first app listed. There are still some regressions compared with Android 12 and iOS, though. In theory, this is supposed to dunk all the apps on your home screen into the same wallpaper-based background and foreground colors, leaving you with a uniform-looking design. However, Android 13 is the first Android version to bring themed icon support to third-party apps, so you're finally no longer limited to themed Google apps. Like Android 12, Android 13 also lets you turn on themed icons for your home screen, which builds on top of what the first release brought. All this is accessible from the Wallpapers & Style settings on the home screen. This gives you a lot more flexibility in changing your interface colors without switching wallpapers, and it is a much-needed push in the right direction. Most notably, Android 13 offers many more extracted colors to pick from, giving you up to 16 different color themes from one wallpaper. Android 13 doesn't outright fix any of the underlying issues with the new design language, but it builds on top of what Android 12 introduced and refines certain aspects. For the first time electricity could be put to continuous work.ĭespite their eclipse, Leyden jars did not end up on history’s junk heap. In the 1790s, at the tail end of the Enlightenment, an argument about electricity between two Italian scientists-Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta-led to Volta building the very first battery. Franklin called these linked jars a battery, but unlike a real battery Leyden jars released all their energy in a single burst. Jars could also be linked up, allowing more charge to be stored. To entertain a king, Jean-Antoine Nollet made 180 French soldiers jump into the air as electricity from his Leyden jars coursed through them. Benjamin Franklin used one in his famous kite experiment to show that lightning was ordinary electricity. The Leyden jar was used to great effect in serious science and in popular entertainment. I believed that I was done for.” Musschenbroek proceeded to give detailed instructions on how to build his jar, and in an era of rampant self-experimentation the curious in both Europe and America were quick to give themselves nosebleeds, dizzy spells, and what to some felt like heart attacks during their investigations. Musschenbroek recorded what happened when he first touched the wire after charging the jar: “Suddenly I received in my right hand a shock of such violence that my whole body was shaken as by a lightning stroke. But there was no way of storing the charge produced by the friction of cloth or leather on the spinning glass-that is, until around 1745, when Jurgen von Kleist in Pomerania and Pieter van Musschenbroek in Leyden created what became known as the Leyden jar.Īt its simplest the Leyden jar is a glass bottle that is partly filled with water with a wire running into it (later jars had metal foil wrapped around the inside and outside of the glass and no water). In the very early 1700s Francis Hauksbee put together a glass globe and a crank to make an electrostatic machine. While HMA doesn’t offer any guarantees about BitTorrent or video streaming support, the VPN doesn’t block file-sharing connections, and the publisher’s website includes tips on getting access to popular streaming services. HMA can be used with a wide range of routers as it supports the L2TP and PPTP protocols note that the latter has comparatively weak security, but it should be fine if you just want to spoof your location. HMA also offers ten-connection options which work out to £5.99 a month and £4.59 per month respectively – or you can configure the VPN on your router and send all your traffic over a single secure connection. Those prices permit up to five simultaneous connections, with client apps offered for all the major desktop and mobile platforms along with a Chrome extension that lets you control the VPN from your browser. Otherwise you’ll pay £39.48 for a year’s service (equivalent to £3.29 a month) or £86.04 for three years, which works out to a very competitive £2.39 a month. HMA is also one of the very few VPNs to offer an up-front free trial – you can sign up for seven days and cancel during that period to ensure you’re not charged. Connection speeds of up to 20Gbits/sec are claimed, and the company operates more than a thousand servers across 210 countries and territories, so you can virtually locate yourself almost anywhere in the world. It’s a serious VPN, though, fully capable of concealing your online activity by encrypting your internet traffic and routing it through its own secure gateways. The acronym HMA stands for “Hide My Ass”, and the brand’s website is covered in jokey donkey imagery. As such, R-TT's request coincided with a good opportunity to investigate some potentially interesting new data recovery tools. If there are tools available that can outperform R-Studio that we did not know about, it's in our best interest as working data recovery professionals to evaluate them and determine if they are a good fit for our business. We were less familiar with some of the products that TopTenReviews had rated above R-Studio. R-Studio has been on the market for over 15 years, and it is practically a household name in the industry. We had heard of R-Studio, as most data recovery professionals have. Stellar Phoenix, which was not in the top three when we began our tests, was moved up to #3. When our tests were finished in September, we found that R-Studio rank was changed to #5 in the charts but the top two products were the same. Their product R-Studio was featured as #8 in the Data Recovery Software category on -TT asked us to evaluate the top four products and compare their capabilities with R-Studio as they had a strong feeling that the rating distribution was not up-to-date. (R-TT), a data recovery software company based in Ontario, Canada. Professionals simply want the best tool available-if we can find an excellent product that is faster and better than the competitors, then it will easily pay for itself as we do business with it in our toolkit.Ĭoincidently, we were approached this summer by R-Tools Technology Inc. One big difference when evaluating from a data recovery professional's perspective versus a home user's perspective is that price is less of an object. Just like DIY users, we don't have the luxury of time to test each and every product that comes on the market, so we too rely on trusted authorities in the tech community for exposure to new cutting edge products. Although we at DigiLabs have come to favor the tools that have proven reliable and effective over the years in our own practice, it is in our best interest to evaluate new and groundbreaking data recovery technology as it becomes available. Likewise, data recovery professionals occasionally learn about new tools from websites like these. These websites introduce the top data recovery utilities to users who are new to the field. This places a lot of trust in the judgment and impartiality of these review and rating websites. In a field where there are dozens of options, most users will only test out the top ranked utilities on such websites. This is the reason why most users turn to independent review and rating websites in order to narrow down their options. If the lost data is critical for an upcoming work or school deadline, nobody wants to spend the day downloading and evaluating free demos one after another. While the free demo utilities offered by most vendors for evaluation are helpful, most users do not have the time or patience to test drive multiple titles before addressing their situation. Most users have little to no experience with data recovery utilities and don't begin their research until there is a data loss emergency at hand. The plethora of choices in the data recovery software market presents a challenge to DIY users. Today, there are dozens of titles available that target both home users and professionals, offering a wide array of features, price models, and platforms. The first few utilities had limited functionality and unintuitive user interfaces. The market for DIY (Do-It-Yourself) data recovery software has significantly changed in the last 15 years. Circumventing Geographical blockades with a VPN-server To ensure complete anonymity it is of the utmost importance that your VPN-provider doesn’t collect and save logs on your internet usage either. You will enter the world wide web with a IP-address of a VPN-server, not with your own. Your IP-address will be hidden when using a VPN-service since you will always connect to a VPN-server first. An IP-address is a unique line of numbers which is connected to one specific internet connection. Both governments as well as companies use your IP-address to collect your data and to connect internet traffic back to you. Your online privacy is not guaranteed as such. Google and Facebook have assembled massive databases with data of their clients, among which Dutch clients. Besides government actors, companies are also quite interested in your internet data. Beside the Dutch government there are also foreign actors like the American NSA, who regularly make the news concerning international spying activities. The storage obligation regarding internet data has been abolished in 2015 in the Netherlands but the government keeps looking for ways to exercise control over the internet. The better VPN-providers use a so-called 256 but encryption key to encrypt the data to prevent this from ever happening. For this to work it is paramount that the encryption is not hackable by a hacker. Thus, you are able to safely use a public WIFI network. Even if a hacker can intercept this data, it will be completely unreadable to him. This means that only your device and the VPN-server will be able to read the data traffic between them. As a VPN-user you will always have an encrypted connection with a VPN-server. A VPN-service protects against this kind of cyber criminality. This gives these hackers access to log data of mail- or bank accounts. Several studies conducted by the Dutch media have shown that is extremely easy for cyber criminals to intercept data traffic of users of open WIFI networks. One of these methods is to use open WIFI networks. Hackers use several methods to break into computers. A bit more than 5% of all Dutch people have become victim of hacking. Magpie (played by Harris), a resident of the community, delves into her own dark secrets while seeking the truth behind the homicide. Set in an isolated church community under a pastor's rule, the film unravels as a murder triggers paranoia, with whispers of a peculiar "Beast" dwelling in the woods. Alongside Jodhi May, Emma Appleton, Toby Stephens, and Lewis Gribben, Harris stars in this chilling tale. The episode ends with Harris talking about institutional racism, saying "It will happen again," only for Barney to offer his support by saying "And we'll handle it.Barney Harris takes the lead in the upcoming horror flick "Magpie," directed by Dean Puckett. Darvec gives this away when he says "We thought he was just another-". Profiling: What happened when the two white cops shot at the black man with the gun. Also, one of the few times we see Harris really angry, and with good reason: it's implied that a racist cop and a trainee he's mentoring shot at Harris on the excuse that they believed he was a burglar. When Barney takes him aside and asks why he arrested a panhandler, Wojo says that he arrested the guy for being an able-bodied panhandler, which Wojo found offensive. Hot-Blooded: One of many instances of Wojo letting his moral outrage direct his policing.Harris is decidedly not impressed with the comparison. Height Angst: Levitt makes an unsuccessful effort to express solidarity with Harris by saying that he, Levitt, is a member of another minority group: short people. He was fired from his job as a stockbroker, so he was left tramping around trying to find work, until one day he had to ask someone to give him train fare home, and he realized it was easy. Curse Cut Short: When questioned by Barney on what happened to Harris, Slater says that he and his partner thought it was "just another -", with Barney sharply cutting Slater off before he can employ a racial slur. He's still a Jerkass, in this episode dismissing shooting at Harris as no big deal. Continuity Nod: Officer Slater makes his return two years after he was seen in " Hash".Wojo: I thought those differences weren't important anymore!īarney: They're not! But they are. note What he was trying to say is that it's wrong to judge someone by race, but they should be aware of the fact that Harris still has to face racism. By "No", I Mean "Yes": Barney tries to explain to Wojo that Harris' race gives him a particular set of problems to deal with, after being shot at by fellow cops has (understandably) made Harris angry at the world in general-although here it's not a matter of Insistent Terminology, but Barney grappling with words. At the end of the episode, Dietrich innocently (or possibly not) repeats the punchline, at which Wojo gives him a Death Glare. He tries not to give the punchline, though Wojo wheedles it out of him. This is meant to demonstrate to Wojo (who is of Polish descent) that everyone has buttons that can be insensitively pressed by others who may not truly understand what they're saying. Brick Joke: Earlier on in the episode, to try to explain Harris' feelings (that being the only Black detective in the precinct means that none of them can truly understand on an internal level what he's going through, but can sympathize and give support) to Wojo, he tells the first part of an old "dimwitted Polish" stereotype joke to Wojo.Barney sips, grimaces, and says it tastes like "wood". Being Dietrich, instead of making regular coffee he makes some kind of supposedly healthy coffee substitute out of barley. Bad to the Last Drop: With Yemana away in court (in fact he would never return as Jack Soo was dying of cancer), Dietrich is left to make the coffee.Whittney regards begging as a career and is successful enough with it to support a family and keep a maid. Wojo arrests one Stanford Whittney for panhandling, basically because Wojo was offended that a perfectly able-bodied man is begging on the street. A nasty argument ensues, which leads to a discussion of structural racism in the police department (in 1978!). Harris is left seething with rage, which is made worse when Slater and Darvec report to the squad room and write the whole thing off as a misunderstanding, and worse still when Barney tells Harris that nothing will happen until the NYPD with its laborious bureaucracy can weigh in. They shot at him, and the real bandit got away. Officers Slater and Darvec took one look at Harris, a black man with a gun, and assumed he was the armed robber. "The Harris Incident" is the ninth episode of the fifth season of Barney Miller.īarney receives a startling phone call in the office: someone took a shot at Harris! And it was another cop! It seems that Harris was at the scene of an armed robbery, and was in the process of making an arrest, when two beat cops showed up.
